Club 10 23rd June on G10/57

(From Tony Alston)

Richard Payn    21.25
Adam Atkinson   22.32
Rob Royston     21.49 PTT
Marcus Bruton   21.36   PTT

Lovely warm evening made warmer by the fact that I forgot to bring out any
numbers! Fortunately Jon Eglington of the Redhill, who were off in front of
us, gave me the remainder of his numbers.
All of you who missed the event would certainly have done PBs.
Many thanks to Norman Stone, who marshalled at the turn for both clubs and
Ant Draper who was pusher off.
The traffic was light as everybody (except us) were recovering from watching
the England match.

Richard was resplendent in the new club kit. (See Below)  Ron tells me that all of the kit is now in. If you have ordered kit please contact Ron or Richard.

The next evening the conditions were equally good. I (Duncan writing now) can verify this because I did my fastest 10 for about 30 years with a 24.50 on the Thanet Way. Ron did a middling 22 and I don't yet know what Debbie did as I haven't had the result sheet, and didn't hang around at the finish.

Here is the result of the first evening 10

CLUB TEN    26th May

    Paul Delicata   PTT     27.12
    Mark Ellison    PTT     29.20
Reasonable weather, but a bit windy. Thanks to Dennis Rolfe and Norman
Stone, who marshalled.
John Edwards was riding his first ever time trial!
This event was brought to you by Duncan & Tony (Purveyors of Fast Times to
the Nobility).

Here is the result of our first club event in 2010.

This was one of the best mornings of the year so far. Thanks to Tony Alson, and Norman Stone (Timekeepers), Jan Sommerfeld (Photographer), and to John Percival, Norman Cotton, and Dave Holder for coming out to support us. And of course thanks to all those who competed.

2009.

Here is the result of the club hill climb on the newly measured Gangers
Hill.
Club Hill Climb    Gangers Hill Sunday 13th September

1    Tim Stevens        3.55.5
2    Roger Beswick    4.22.6
3    Stuart Hourigan   4.22.6
4    Richard Payn       4.54.7
5    Paddy Bowe        5.10.1
6    John Percival      5.44.0
    Roy Instrall            5.11.1    PTT

So next year the time to beat is 3.55.5 (That's 3minutes 55.5 seconds)

Many thanks to Norman Stone (who brought out the signs by car), Norman
Cotton and Jan Sommerfeld (starter & pusher off) and Phill Watkins
(supporter). Timekeeper yours truly.
I think the riders "enjoyed" the hill, several said they would be back next
year. By the magic of modern technology Jan and I were able to start our
watches while we were at opposite ends of the course; nobody queried their
times (not much anyway) and Paddy was magnanimous in defeat after being
dethroned by Tim.
Before the hill climb the club ride started (a little late) from Glebe Way,
see photo, and we just made it by eleven to the Hill Climb (mostly because
they were waiting for me). A nice run via the top of Titsey Hill to
Tandridge Lane and Gangers.

After the H/C we were running a bit late so we decided, at Jan's suggestion,
that we would use Tilburstow for the Freewheel competition. As Jan said
"With Godstone Farm shut due to the E coli outbreak it will be really quiet
on the hill." Wrong, wrong, wrong. Halfway down was a mass of television
vans and irate drivers doing u-turns because they couldn't get in to the
farm. As I went through, after breaking hard to miss a car coming up the
hill on my side of the road, somebody called out "There's another one".
Jan, of course won the Freewheel.
Afterwards we went on to the Hare and Hounds for a meal where somebody
pointed out we were locking up eight grands worth of bikes with ten quids
worth of locks. A good day. Come along next year.
In true Nomad tradition Charlie and Cathy Ayson turned up late to the meal,
having gone to the old venue The Red Barn; you know, the one that was closed
last time we went there. Next time perhaps we could have a few more come for
the nosh, there is plenty of room at the pub and Godstone is only a minute
from the M25, so access is really easy!

All the best,
Tony

Sun 16th August. Richard Payn sent the following:

Here is a picture of the 4-up team from Sunday. Sadly, after the first few miles, we weren't often together as I was having trouble up the hills!!

Well done to the other 3 for dragging me round!!

We did have one good moment at the end where we outsprinted two other teams for the finish line :-) One team we had caught, the other had caught us but we showed them both how to finish

Nomads in the Gravesend CC 10 on July 18th (From Mark Gidney)

We just (!!!) missed out on the team prize this morning, in dry but very windy (on the longer, harder return leg) in the Gravesend CC 10 on the Q10/22. Colin did 26.14, Duncan 28.24 & I did 23.41, Pete Tadros did not seem to notice the wind and thrashed everyone with a 20.54

Mark

Duncan from the actual event (My Personal Photographer happened to be there)

I haven't seen many club results recently but I did note that Tony Draper came 3rd in the San Fairy Ann 10 on the Q10/22 Harrietsham July 4th with a 21.29

Tony Draper.

Club Event Wednesday 24th May on Q10/18

Tony Alston writes:

Ho Racers,
Herewith the result of Wednesdays 10.
Must be our biggest field for very many years. Good to see Julian all the
way from Colchester and welcome Adam, not a bad start, a 24 on a tough
course. Does anybody know what the course record is? Can't be much faster
than a 22.14.
Also lots of willing helpers, thanks to Keith Boniface, Norman Stone, Dennis
Rolfe, Stuart Hourigan, Jan Sommerfeld (with camera) and Jessica Payn.
We even had a chap park his motor bike just in front of the line, while we
were starting, asking for directions to Badgers Mount!

Report from Richard on 14th April 2009

Five Nomads were on the start sheet for the KCA 25 at Chilham.

The weather was looking a bid dodgy in Hayes as the alarm went off at 5.00am - ouch!! However, it was even earlier for Stuart, who had to get to my house for 5:45am so we could pick Nick up at 6.00am.

The drizzle stopped and everything looked OK until we got to the HQ, where there was pretty thick fog. Mark arrived shortly after us, but sadly no sign of Colin - hope everything is OK there!

The start was delayed by half an hour, so there was plenty of time to mill around. Mark had built up a new TT bike, which looked very smart. Unfortunately, he got to the start line and notice a big bubble on his tub. He went back to change it but must have run out of time as he was a DNS.

Nick had borrowed Ron's Pinarello time trial bike, so he was all set up to improve on his previous ride, resplendant in his new aero helmet. I think the words he used after he finished were something like "F**k that was hard, I hate time trialling", but with a big grin!! Despite suffering from a numb left leg (position still needs a tweak), he took a massive 4:52 off his previous time, ending up with a 1:04:17 - and Carole Gandy only beat him by 55 seconds this time rather then 4 mniutes - I'm sure you'll thrash her next time Nick!!

Stuart was looking good on his warm up, powering down to the start. However, his hamstring gave way at about 12 miles, so he ended up being a DNF.

I was still feeling the effects of a cold, but I was reasonably happy with 58:04 for 14th place. I wasn't quite so happy that the man a minute behind me caught me at 12 miles and dropped me for another minute and a half, but he did come 3rd overall!!

The VC Elan were completely dominant in the overall placings, taking the top 5 spots with four "55"s and a "56".

All eyes are now on this coming Sunday's SCCU 25, run by our evergreen Tony Alston.

Cheers

Richard

Redmon CC 25 5th April on G25/45

The Redmon 25 was held in very sunny conditions, although there was a
nagging headwind for the first 5 miles which everyone found a bit
demoralising. However, the bit through Ockley was nice and fast,
although Ron had to have "polite" words with an idiot car driver that
stopped suddenly just as he was about to catch a rider. Sadly Mark
wasn't able to start as his frame spontaneously cracked around the
seatpin in the space of two weeks - Stuart's suggestion of a gaffer tape
repair seemed like one risk too many!!

Richard Payn         57:24         (8th and 3rd Vet on scratch)

Stuart Hourigan      59:17         (15th)

Ron Keeble         1:00:41     Fastest Vet on Standard by over 3 minutes and 21st

Debbie Percival   1:07:19     2nd Fastest lady

Mark Gidney was a DNS as his frame cracked before the start. (A feeble excuse!)

As you can see, Ron was faster old tosser by over 3 minutes on standard
and I was 3rd fastest old tosser on scratch. Debbie was 2nd fastest lady
and Stuart made the top 15. Pete also rode out to provide team support
and John P was team mechanic for Ron and Debbie.

The above information was given by Richard

Inter Club Hilly Saturday 4th April 2009 Result.

We had a very disappointing turn out for this year's event, with only six riders braving the slightly damp and misty conditions. It was however quite warm and with very little wind, potentially fast. The winning time of 32.02 must be very close to the record for this circuit. ( This is in fact held by Ian O'Hara with a 31.31 in 2007). Thanks to Norman Stone, Brian Skelton, and Richard Payn for supporting us. Unfortunately Bob Loader is ill at the moment and was unable to provide his usual help. Tony Alston was also absent with the weak excuse that he had to attend a family wedding.

8        Kristian Cave        VCL (PTT)     43.05
9        Les Clarke            34 Nomads    43.40

On a fine and fairly warm morning Tony Draper and Les Clarke made a fine
Nomad sandwich in the club Hilly; taking first and last place.
Kristian Cave said he would gone a lot quicker had he not had to wait for
his Dad Steve on all the hills. Steve Cave was riding "shotgun" behind
behind Kristian; presumably in training for the Remon GP in ten years time.
Steve and Kristian completed the "Tour of Flanders" sportive last week,
climbing many of the bergs that are part of the Pro event, not bad for a
fouteen year old. Of course, once again, Kristian had to wait for Steve on
all the hills. Congratulations.
Everybody seemed quite pleased with their times.
Many thanks to Duncan for putting out and collecting the signs (that's one
more lap than the riders), Paddy and Bob Loader for marshalling and Norman for being pusheroff and spotter. Timekeeper was me.
All we need next year is a few more Nomads out.
President Richard (with his aide de camp Pete) graced us with his presence
after the event proclaiming "Today is a training day" before preceeding off
in the general direction of Hastings.

We have our first result already.

Richard Payn bravely took part in the Southborough and District Wheelers traditional New Year's Day 10 on the Q10/10 at Bethersden, Kent. In cold, Foggy, conditions.

Event winner was Sean Yates in 22.50. Richard achieved 23.58 giving him 7th place on the day. A superbe start to his season.

2007

Here is the result of the last club 10 of 2007.

    15th September on the G10/57

1    Richard Payn        22.13
2    Tony Draper         23.06
3    John Percival         25.39
PTT    Paul James       22.10
PTT    Henry James     24.15

It was a lovely calm morning, if a little chilly at first. I knew it was
going to be serious because both Richard and John were warming up on turbos
when I arrived. Both John and Richard did their season best tens. Tony, who
has been competing in running events as well as TTs, was also pleased
with his time particularly as he had spent some time browsing round the Boot
Fair near the turn before continuing with the event. Incidentally Paul James
(In Gear Development Team) is only 15 and improved by 30 seconds.
Many thanks to birthday boy Norman Stone for pushing off, rushing to his car
to get out to the turn just before the riders arrived. It should be
remembered that we must have a marshal at the turn otherwise there would be
no event.

All the best,
Tony

Sadly nobody from the Nomads rode, although it was a local course and quite a good morning. I did try to ride, but got asked to do the timekeeping instead, otherwise I would have quite clearly won.

Wednesday 25th July No result from the last club event on this course as nobody turned up to ride. Tony and I were there and have claimed equal 1st place.

Result of Ten on 10th July

1st       Tony Draper           23.08

2nd       Paul Gibbons        26.18

3rd       John Percival         27.19

Many thanks to Norman Stone and Dick Berkeley for marshalling. Congratulations to Norman and Val on their wedding anniversary the same day as the Ten. Tony Draper said he hasn't had a nights sleep since his baby was born so he had a snooze half way round. Paul Gibbons was pleased with his time as he is just recovering from competing in a FULL triathlon where his saddle fell off eighty odd miles into the 112 mile bike section leaving him to ride the last twenty-two miles standing up. John was also pleased with his ride, as working on the BCCRCM (Bowe Comparative Course and Rider Calculation Method) his ride was worth at least a short 19 on the G10/57. Entertainment was provided free when the club was treated to a superb demonstration of tyre smoking when an old Aston, driven by a w****r, did "doughnuts " on the road outside the Pollhill Arms, before speeding away with bits flying off his car.

As ever timekeeping by Duncan and Tony.

LAST TEN IS ON 24th July, please try to be there.

Events on 30th May, 13th June, and 27th June had to be cancelled because of bad weather-lack of marshals, lack of riders. Please check with Tony or Duncan to find out if there is going to be an event. The next club 10 is scheduled for 11th July.

Club Evening '10 on Wed 2nd May

1    Richard Payn    23.54
2    Rob Ward        24.19
3    Ron Keeble        25.49
4    John Percival    27.55

The first club Ten of the year was a very windy one but Richard was very
pleased to get inside 24 mins. Rob was suprised to do a short 24 as it was
his first competetive event for eight years. Until he told me I would have
been prepared to swear that it was only three or four years ago that Rob was
racing. Ron had a siezed on front brake, you could see his rim glowing red
as he came up to the line and John said he quite enjoyed the ride. Many
thanks to Ron Stevens and Norman Stone who marshalled the course,
resplendent in yellow jackets. We can tell you all now that the reason we
had two timekeepers was so that if the road works were still at the bottom
of Polhill one of us could have timed how long the riders were delayed by
the lights. Timekeepers Duncan and Tony. Next Ten 16th May.

Our first club event of the year has taken place.

Here is the full result:

Inter Club Hilly on Course GS310 Saturday 14th April 2007

8    Les Clarke        Nomads          43.12
9    Mike Coward        Nomads      45.50

Course and lap record for Ian O'Hara on a lovely day. John Percival, Dave
Rowe (yes that Dave Rowe), Norman Stone all assisted. Jan Sommerfeld was
official photographer and , as ever Duncan drove round the course twice
putting out the signs and picking them up afterwards. Strangely there were
no disputes about the times, so I must be picking up a few tips from Duncan
who is now a full official timekeeper.
Nice to see Mick Coward and dog, all the way down from Yorkshire.

I just noticed the Time Trial results  in this week's 'CYCLING WEEKLY' that our own John Percival was second veteran in the Southern Counties C U Best All Rounder Competition.

Kevin Shaw with +106.49 only just beat John who's +103.25 was a great achievement. In fact John seems to have had his best season for some time.

Hill Climb Result

1st    Anthony Draper        3.53

 3rd   Paddy Bowe            4.40

Many thanks to Jan and Norman for timing the event.

Freewheel Winner

Steve Cave (For the 200th year running)

I noticed that club members John Percival, Debbie Percival, and Colin Marshall all rode the V.T.T.A (Kent Group) 50 mile event on the Romney Marsh on Sunday 17th September. I will post their results as soon as I get them.......

Debbie did a         2.10.28    +19.23

John                     2.17.22    +27.41

Colin                    2.12.58    +13.34

Club 10 16th September on G10/57

Only two club members turned up to ride for this last club time trial of the season.

The result was:

1     Richard Payn    22.17

2.    Les Clarke        25.18

Thanks to Norman Stone for doing the pushing off and marshalling the turn, and Tony for timekeeping.

Club Open 10,  2nd September on the Q10/19 Tonbridge Bypass.

It seems to have been a very good day with a lot of fast times recorded. However, we were let down by lack of marshalls in place, and one late arrival who was meant to be pushing off. We were lucky to get away with it.

The event was won by Sean Yates in 19m 54s.

Nomads all did respectable times:

Richard Payn        11th    21.15

Tony Draper          23rd    22.08

Debbie Percival    55th    23.51

Andy Smith            63rd    25.03

Les Clark                70th    26.12

Thank you to all club members who rode and managed to help out, and in particular Tom Burke from the Dulwich Paragon, who while waiting for a late start kindly did the pushing off until Ron Stevens arrived.

Don't forget the Bill Carver 10 on 16th Sept on G10/57 (Rusper -Crawley) at 07.45 hrs

and the Hill Climb on 8th October at Star Hill  11.00 hrs

Congratulations to Debbie Percival on her 7th place in the National 100 mile Champs. The fastest 100 in the club this year!

Club 10' 26th July 2006, Q10/18

This was the last of this years 'club evening' 10's

The result was:

1.    Andy Smith        26.24

2.    Paddy Bowe      26.28

3.    John Percival    27.10

4.    Paul Gibbons    27.29

DNF (Went off course) Richard Payn

The next club 10 will be on Saturday 16th Sept on G10/57    Rusper-Crawley   at 07.45 am.

Don't forget Ron Keeble's Open 10 on Saturday 2nd Sept on the Q10/19 Tonbridge By Pass. Start 06.15 am.

Club 10' 13th July 2006, Q10/18

Another good evening, but only four riders! I know it is holiday time. The last evening 10 of 2006 will take place on Wed 26th July. Try to make it a good event.

This does not detract from some very good times on a warm but breezy evening. New member Daniel Marks did a very respectable time following his crash two weeks ago, without the aid of tri-bars.

The full result was:

1.    Tony Draper        23.22

2.    Paddy Bowe        25.34

3.    Daniel Marks        26.14

4.    John Percival      26.40

Club 10' 28th June 2006 Q10/18

On the best evening we have had this year it was disappointing that only three of our newest members turned out to ride.

And what a ride. Anthony Draper surprised the timekeeper (Duncan) on his way to the finish. Duncan however managed to stop the clock as Anthony crossed the line with a superbe time on 22.37 (Is this a course record?). The full result was:

1.    Anthony Draper        22.37

2.    Andrew Smith          26.30

3.    Paul Gibbons           26.52.

New member Daniel Marks although not riding the event distinguished himself while training by crashing into your time trial secretary's car! Daniel suffered bruising and some broken teeth, and his bike was somewhat damaged, but seems OK. We hope he is back on his bike quickly.

Next Club Event is on Wed 12th July at 7.30pm Course Q10/18 Pollhill

The Sydenham Wheelers Promoted an Inter-Club Hilly on Saturday June 24th. This was on a course dreamt up by Bob Loader based on our Hilly Course GS/310 Ide Hill, Hubbards Hill, Goathurst Common, with an additional loop finishing up Baileys Hill. In all 21 mile

The result was:

Pos.            Rider                        Club                            1st Lap 12.1m                            Finish 21 m

1               Anthony Draper        '34 Nomads                    0.32.09*                                        0.57.18

2.              Mark Newton             Sydenham                    0.34.55                                        1.02.29

3.              Paddy Bowe              '34 Nomads                   0.35.46                                        1.03.24

4.              Ed Rieu                      Sydenham                    0.37.54                                        1.07.49

I think that Anthony's 1st lap time is a new record for our hilly circuit, beating Matt Lucas' timeof 32.32  set in April. This year.

14th June: This event was cancelled due to the fact that only one rider turned up ready to race. There were at least six marshals, timekeepers etc.

Result Club 10 on Q10/18 31st May 2006

Ho Nomads,
At last we were able to run a club 10 on the Polhill Course. A chilly
evening but dry at last. Congratulation to Tony Draper on winning his second
ever time trial, after getting first handicap in the Counties 10 in his
first event. Pete will be fitting 28mm touring tyres for the next ten.
Thanks to Norman for marshalling the turn off the A21 and to Rita for doing
the Badgers Mount roundabout.
We need at least two marshals for this course, plus several signs.
I couldn't find the finish point as the sign was hidden in bushes, so I
decided to keep walking up the road until the first rider came along, hoping
that I would find the sign before anybody turned up. Fortunately    Mike Porter
arrived when I was only about 20 yards from the sign, although I still
hadn't seen it.
For those who fancy coming out, we park in the large lay-by at the top of
Pollhill.

The evening 10 series got off to a bad start when the first event 3rd May had to be cancelled because of road works. The 2nd event was hit by awful weather, so nobody wanted to race.

Congratulations to Matt on a course record ride on a far from perfect
morning.
At 7.30 it was raining quite heavily with ominous black clouds everywhere
and I must admit I thought that Duncan and I would be the only people to
turn up. Almost immediately Nomads started to arrive, albeit with various
comments such as "I'm not riding if it keeps raining". When six Nomad riders
had turned up and no Sydenham were in evidence we all thought it would be a
Nomad whitewash. Duncan then said he thought that Bob Loader had told the
Sydenham that the start was 8.30 and that they were all riding a ten on the
Q10/19 and would be arriving as soon as they had finished their club event.
True to their word the Sydenham turned up at eight, well and truly warmed up
and by that time patches of blue were breaking through and the rain stopped.
Thanks to all the riders for turning out on what promised to be rough
morning and to all the marshals and spectators.
Three new racing Nomads in one event, can't be bad.
Many thanks to Duncan for putting out all the signs before the event and
collecting them afterwards.
