Tony Alston.

As of today 20th July 2009 Tony is 70 years old. Congratulations from all of us.

Here is the birthday old feller.

Well, it has all been a bit quiet recently so I thought I'd send out another message.

So what has been happening in Nomad land? Well, Stuart managed to get within 3 seconds of his 10 mile PB, but didn't think it was worth sharing with everyone - far too modest!! Anthony returned to racing with a far too quick 21:47 on a very windy day. If only Ron and myself had both been 2 minutes quicker we might have got the team prize. Colin has been entering events, but hasn't been well enough to ride. However, he plans to return to racing in the VC Elan midweek evening 10s down on the Q10/30 - these can be fast events. Nick had to miss last Saturday's 10 due to work commitments, but had his first road race on the Sunday morning. With Stuart supporting from the sidelines, Nick got 7th or 8th in the sprint, which was a great first result. I think we can expect a bit more road racing from Nick. Tim Stevens has a good result in ihs first outing of the year, coming 10th in the Wigmore 25 with a useful 56:34, following this up with 6th place in the Worthing Excelsior 25 last weekend.

Looking forward, there are 4 of us down to do the San Fairy 50 on Sunday, although I'm not sure how keen I'll be if it is wet and windy.

Of course, the important date for the diaries is Wednesday 27th May, when the 34th Nomads World Championship 10 will be held at Polhill, 7:30 start. Best bikes, no socks, skin suits and sealed envelopes with excuses to Tony before the start.

After that, there is another 25 on the Q25/8 Chilham course on the 14th June which Colin and I are entering.

Regards

Richard

Hi Tony,

I was just looking at the Nomads web site this morning and to my surprise in the rogues gallery section under 'Isle of WIght 1964' I saw a black and white photo which included myself. Why I am holding you up, I have no idea. I also hope I have put on a bit of weight since then - it must have been the post war diets - non of us look very healthy.

I don't know if you remember me it was a long time ago. I was probably only in the club for a couple of years, but I remember the times with fondness. The other members I can recall quickly were - Dave Holder, Paddy Bowe (who I have seen once since - he lived opposite my sister in law), Duncan Leith, someone called Glimpy who keep falling off, Ron 'Buggsy' Stevens (who I met earlier in the year near Shoreham on his bike), Graham or Gordon Hayman, Ron King, Ginger ... (I met him in the Temple Bar pub years ago) and of course Ron Keeble and Dave 'Milky' Rowe. We all went to a few parties at that time and I seem to recall your girlfriend was called Pauline, I might be wrong about that though.

I took up reading the CW again a few years ago and in the first edition I ever purchased there was a letter from a young lady thanking a certain Ian Alston who came to her aid. I often wondered if that was you and if you had an ulterior motive!

I still go for a ride most weekends aroung Dartford and enter a few reliability trials (Gravesend CC mostly). I have been to the last two World Championships with some friends who are in Gemini. Yesterday three of us did the Southern Sportive in Sussex which was quite an effort but very enjoyable. I mainly play badminton twice a week which means theres not enough time to put to getting cycling fit - roll on retirement.

Finally I did win the cub 30 in 1964 (not a very good time but the weather was atrocious).

Finally again, I do have another photo from the above collection, I'll try and find it.

Regards

Colin Finn

(Colin if you read this. As far as I remember the photo was taken by Tom Smith. Gordon Hayman was also on the island and I am sure that there were others but can't remember who. Regards Duncan. We would appreciate any club photos that you have so that we can vary the 'rogues gallery' regularly)
